Matte Liquid Lipsticks – Kylie Lip Kits VS Huda Beauty VS Gerard Cosmetics

I don’t know about you but I absolutely love a Matte Lip and 2016 saw the rise of the Matte Liquid Lipstick, with Kylie Jenner and Jeffree Star leading the way.  I brought into this craze; as I love the nude look and much prefer the matte effect to the gloss, or high shine.

The 3 brands that I have purchased and tried are Kylie Lip Kit, Huda Beauty and Gerard Cosmetics – so I will be reviewing those based on colour, range wearability and durability.

Kylie Lip Kit

As the OG of the Matte Lip look and the self proclaimed Queen of #LipGoals, I was super excited when Kylie announced her own Matte Lipsticks & have purchased Moon, Dolce K, Leo & Exposed.

Firstly, the attraction for me lies with the variants of Nudes (which I mainly wear), they are all incredible and a girl can never have too many shades of Nude. I think I have always loved that look, I used to just have the 90s foundation lip at school and ever since then I’ve been hooked.

When the LipKits arrived, they were beautifully packaged and feel like a lux item. They go on easily & I like the Lip Liner for a fuller lip. My only criticism is this, do not put too much product on your lip or layer it as the product begins to crumble off… not a good look and also feels strange and not comfortable. Also, not a criticism as such, but I think a lot of the special edition shades are very very similar, if not the same as the standard range…

Kylie Lip Kit – 8/10

Range, packing, durability = tick!

Wearability – too much product = crumble mouth.

Kylie Lip Kit – $30 – £23

Huda Beauty

I got brought a Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipstick in shade Famous – a beautiful Burgundy shade perfect for autumn. Again packaging was lux, and her range of colours is also good (not as good as Kylie on the Nude front).

The Huda Beauty is a lot lighter, silkier and feels better on the lip. However, it leaves an undesired patchy look and it does not last. I have worn this out a few times and each time the product comes off of the main lip area and stays around the lip line (my pet HATE with a lip product). It’s a real shame, as it feels so nice on the lip … the time it is on there anyway. If I am going to use a Burgundy Shade in a Matte effect then Charlotte Tilbury Glastonbury is the way to go (a Lipstick not a Liquid Lipstick).

Also, the product, unlike, Kylie does not come with a Lip Liner and I brought the Lip pencil (Lip Contour) separately.

Huda Liquid Matte – 5/10

Colour & Feel = Great

Wearability and Durability = disappointing, pathy and does not last.

Liquid Matte Lip – £18

Lip Contour – £16

Compare it to the Leo Kylie above s they are a similar colour.

Gerard Cosmetics

I happened upon this brand when searching through Beauty Bay, (one of my favorite past times) and loved the Nude shades they offered. I purchased Iced Mocha and Serenity.

Now, this product does not have the same lux feel as the products formerly mentioned but the wearability, colour and durability is second to none. The product feels amazing; it lasts for a good 2/3 hours before needing to reapply and it feels comfortable on the lip. For a cheaper alternative to the Kylie Lip Kit, it is just as good… actually it could be better.

I wore Serenity as my Wedding Lip, it stayed all day and looked great!

9/10 – Not as lux as the other brands but as an overall Matte Lipstick it is great, love it!

Gerard Cosmetics – £11

What are your experiences with the Matte Liquid Lip? What are your favourite brands? Anything else I should try? Let me know!

  1. Wow this was the most honest review I’ve probably read about KJ lipsticks and Huda BEauty too. I thought something was wrong with me because recently I ordered a HB for the first time ever and i was soooo disappointed. I was like Faccckk, what a waste of money. I think there’s just a lot of hype about these products. I can swear by cheaper lippies any day. I live in India so the options in-store are much less with these brands. I’m dying to try Colorpop, what do you think of those?
p.s. I’m spamming you but I love your blog!!!

    1. Ah I am so happy someone else was disappointed with HB – I spent so much on the Lipstick and Liner and I won’t ever wear it because it leaves that awful streaky look – I look tragic!! I have only seen such rave reviews about it so I thought there must be something wrong with my lips haha! I haven’t tried Colourpop, that is one for my list, as well as Jefree Star!
& spam away 🙂 that’s very kind of you to say!!!

      1. You did ? That’s awesome. I live in a city called Bangalore but I am from Goa, the Sunshine State. Beaches and beer and good food. Hahaha yeah, India is vibrant and very diverse. From one state to the next everything from language and music to culture as a whole just changes.

      2. Ah we didn’t visit Bangalore. We travelled Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Mumbai and Goa. Goa was brilliant but like you said, all so different and we experienced something different everywhere. It was amazing.
